Scoop 101: The Real Story of The Birth of HIP-HOP

It's no secret HIP-HOP, the favorable music genre started in the "BOOGIE DOWN"  Bronx in 1973. What is the actual story of the birth of Hip-Hop besides listening to hit from a few iconic 90s rappers: Biggie, Nas, MOBB DEEP and L.L.Cool. J. Last month, author Joseph C. Ewoodzie, Jr. wrote the book BREAK BEATS IN THE BRONX: REDISCOVERING HIP-HOP'S EARLY YEARS to explain the dynamics and structure of how Hip-Hop was created both as music and lifestyle.

Pop took an excerpt from the book:

The occasion for this wizardry was the 44th anniversary of what is now widely acknowledged as hip-hop's birth: a party in the housing project at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, where a young Jamaican expat named Clive Campbell brought a slice of his homeland's culture to his sister's birthday party. His sound system consisted of booming speakers, two turntables, and lots of funky records. That enabled him to go back and forth between records as they did on the radio and at dance clubs. But, instead of playing the records in full (as he typically had done deejaying parties around the neighborhood), he isolated the funkiest part of select funk jams -- the section where the beat came through at its most pristine -- and turned the party out.

The altered Story: A scenario of multiple people gathered in an abandoned building and hosted a party off of people's electric system. That's not true. Stories can be tweaked all the time, and it could be believable, but this book will reveal not only the "real" history of Hip-Hop but also the lifestyle, transition and the pioneers that contributed to Hip-Hop history.

There are 15 days left until Halloween and today is Monday- the slowest day of the week.  Does anyone like Mondays? I know one person that doesn’t like Mondays- Brenda Spencer, ring a bell?

The long red haired thick glasses wearing 16 years old decided to make her Monday fun. On January 29, 1979, in San Diego, California, Brenda Spencer faked sick and played hooky from school and pulled out her Ruger 10/22 semi-automatic .22 caliber rifle and terrorized the Cleveland Elementary School. She had killed two adults: School principal Burton Wragg and custodian Custodian Mike Suchar and wounded nine children and a police officer.

No one was suspected of the shooting until a San Diego Union-Tribune journalist called Spencer’s home to interview witness within the school area and revealed herself as the shooter. She tells the journalist the reason behind the shooting is because “ I don’t like Mondays,”  This livens up the day.” After several hours, the San Diego police surrounded Brenda in her home until she surrendered because she was craving a cheeseburger.” Isn’t that crazy. After her conviction, her quote " I don't like Mondays" became catchy.  The band,  The Boomtown Rats, made a song " I don't like Mondays."

The Boomtown Rats- I Don't like Mondays (1979)

Overall, Brenda Spencer was charged with two counts of first degree murder and 10 counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Now at 55, Spencer still remains in the California Institution for Women in Chino, California. She was previously denied parole in 1993, 2001 and 2005, and will not be eligible to try again for 10 years.

Simpson induction in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1985)

Guess whose back? That's right  OJ Simpson, the once Pro Football Hall of Fame (1985) player and center of media and press from the 1994 murder of his wife  Nicole Brown Simpson in Brentwood, California.

The former All-American football player was released from Lovelock Correctional Center in Las Vegas, NV on Oct 1.  Simpson served a nine-year sentence for a 2007 armed robbery at Palace Station casino. OJ was trying to 'retrieve' valuables from his football career, ceased from the Los Angeles County Superior Court as settlement payments to the families of his wife and her friend Ron Goldman granted by the Los Angeles civil court from winning the 1997 civil action against him. The trial took over a course of six months and was considered the "trail of the century".

OJ Simpson (2017)

Although " The Juice" is free, according to the parole conditions, Simpson will reside in Las Vegas along with a 5-year probation sentence. State prisons spokeswoman Brooke Keast stated: "We needed to do this to ensure public safety and to avoid any possible incident." The spokeswoman gave the newspapers explicit detail of OJ's prison release. This is, yet, another sad victory for OJ Simpson.

Earlier today, I had watched the 2017 VH1's Hip-Hop Honors  - The 90s Game Changers, I wasn't impressed.  Throughout the  45-minute show, many thoughts flourished at once: What is Regina Hall doing? , There are no other nominees ?, Can Tichina Arnold give her speech to honoree and co-star Martin Lawrence in peace?

The important question: Where are the celebrities who were Actual pioneers of the 90s? Big hitters: L.L.CoolJ, Mobb Deep, TLCP.Diddy, the Wayans Bros and others had heavily influenced the 90s. The selected nominees weren't all 90s famous stars. The three of the six nominees: Martin Lawrence, Hype Williams, and Mariah Carey were 90s household names.

Hip-Hop icon and BET's 2016 Hip-Hop honoree Missy Elliot opens the ceremony performing her usual killer dance routine the best part of the show.  The host, actress Regina Hall introduces the highlights of the event. She lacked energy and tried too hard to interact with the audience. Luckily, there were few performance/acts before presenting awards by music artists: Lil Kim, Trina, Trick Daddy, Remy Ma, Fat Joe  and Teyana Taylor performing Dancing Redley on a broken foot!

I am not downgrading the works of these nominees because they all contributed the growth, but there's other artists who created the foundation of the decade, becoming a groundbreaking phenomenon. I wasn't the one who felt the forgotten acknowledgment of several important artists. SVW member Leelee Lyons made her feelings known on twitter: “Soooooo, @VH1 is doing a show on game changers of the 90’s, but not invite most of the artists that changed the game? Where they do that at?”

Hopefully next year VH1 will do better and update their knowledge of music. But here is a heartfelt clip of Martin Lawrence tribute:

In the 1980s, Human Immunodeficiency Virus - (HIV) / Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) became an epidemic in the United States predominantly in the West Coast. Icons like: Easy-E, Pedro Zamora, and famous AID's activist /artist Keith Harding have succumbed to this illness which shortened their young and talented lives.

Today September 22, BCC news announced a possible new testing to slow down the strength of the life-threating duo disease. The new site article "New antibody attacks 99% of HIV strains" by health and science reporter, James Gallagher explains the progress of update research to cure HIV/AIDS of a French Pharmaceutical company Sanofi. The Paris based company reveals their tactics of their research and work to attach the strain which creates the AIDs symptoms.

The article reveals Sanofi work analysis:

The International Aids Society said it was an "exciting breakthrough." Human trials will start in 2018 to see if it can prevent or treat the infection.

Our bodies struggle to fight HIV because of the virus' incredible ability to mutate and change its appearance.

Confident to find a cure for HIV

Dr. Gary Nabel, the chief scientific officer at Sanofi confidently tells BCC news, "We're getting 99% coverage, and getting coverage at deficient concentrations of the antibody." Although this is great news, over 3 million people worldwide live with HIV / AID causing half of the people to demise terminally and fatally.

Our planet has experienced defeats: Donald Trump planning to ban the DACA program, Labor Day weekend claims eight lives- Chicago (7) and New York (1) and death toll rise due from the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, destroying Texas last weekend. The category four hurricane made its August 25 arrival and landfall occurred the next day, the 26th. A possible event coming out from the eruption of natural disasters and catastrophe, the view of  2017 Solar Eclipse appeared August 21, 2017, for approximately from three to four hours varying from each continent.

Capture of Solar Eclipse 2017

The view of the Solar Eclipse was the main topic of conversation on all social media outlets for the past two weeks until the news of hurricane season.

Hurricane Season

The comfortable seasons of Summer and Fall are indeed joyful but it's also the season for natural disasters to arrive. A total of six hurricanes have occurred from the Atlantic this year: Franklin, Gert, Harvey, Irma, Jose and Katia . The three musketeers: Harvey, Irma and Katia are powerful, causing millions of dollars of damages, death and chaos throughout the North and South American continents.

Hurricane Harvey- August 25-28

The storm started a slow approach as a brief tropical storm. The Weather Channel reports:

Aug. 17- That disturbance finally formed into Tropical Storm Harvey east of the Lesser Antilles. Those islands experienced locally heavy rain and gusty winds as Harvey passed through.

Aug. 19- Harvey succumbed to dry air and unfavorable winds aloft in the eastern Caribbean, and the National Hurricane Center ceased advisories.

Aug. 23-The remnants of Harvey continued to push northwest for several days and eventually crossed Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Once its remnants moved back over water in the southwest Gulf of Mexico, Harvey quickly reformed into a tropical depression.

Aug. 25- In just 56 hours, Harvey grew from a regenerated tropical depression over the Gulf of Mexico into a Category 4 hurricane as it made landfall near the Texas Gulf Coast.

Aug. 25 continued: Rockport, a town of fewer than 10,000 people and about 30 miles up the Texas coast from Corpus Christi. Maximum sustained winds in Harvey's eyeball were 130 mph at that time, making it a Category 4, Harvey was the nation's first major (Category 3 or stronger) hurricane landfall since Hurricane Wilma struck South Florida in October 2005, an almost 12-year run. It was the slow movement from Aug. 26-30 that led to the catastrophic flooding that was observed in southeast Texas.

Aftermath of Harvey

Volunteers save dog from Hurricane Harvey floods

This overview of this reported was surprising and devastating. The aftermath of Hurricane Harvey left Houston underwater with 70 billion dollar damages, abandoned/sacred animals and 65 lives perished including: A texas mom, 41 year old Beaumont resident saved infant daughter from Harvey's flood on the interstate. A family suffers a loss: the family of late Tejano singer Selena also perished in Harvey waters.  Manuel Saldivar, 84, his spouse Belia, 81, and great-grandchildren Devy Saldivar, 16, Dominique Saldivar, 14, Xavier Saldivar, 8 and Daisy Saldivar, 6 died as they were swept away by flood waters . Manuel's son, Sammy Saldivar, was the only person to survive the attempt to seek higher ground during the flooding. This is a tragedy.

Hurricane Irma September 6- Present

Another hurricane, Category 5 Irma made its way towards the Caribbean. This past Wednesday, the female hurricane ripped through the small island of Barbuda located by Antigua, killing a two-year old and destroying the entire island. Yesterday, Irma headed up north to Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, leaving millions without power and damaged homes. This weekend, Hurricane Irma will be heading for its target, Florida increasing havoc and paranoia among the residents. Hurricane Irma is expecting to hit Florida on Saturday.

Governor Rick Scott on Hurricane Irma: "This thing's coming; It looks like it's going to go right through the middle of our state."

Florida Governor Scott's calls a state of emergency

Hurricanes Jose and Katia

As Hurricane Irma is actively bringing destruction up North, two more Hurricanes will be a problem. Hurricanes Jose and Katia follow closely behind Irma to join in on the pathway to destruction. Radar and news all over are keeping track of their whereabouts.

Hurricane Jose- CNN reports: Hurricane Jose strengthened to an "hazardous" Category 4 storm Friday, with maximum sustained winds near 150 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. Jose will make landfall this weekend, following Irma's path.

Hurricane Katia- The current category 1 hurricane slowly reaches into the Gulf of Mexico. An update from U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC):  By mid-morning, Katia was 160 miles (255 km) east of the port of Tampico, with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph (155 km per hour), making the storm a Category 2 hurricane.

What's causing this Mayhem?

Many people including myself ask this question: Why is this happening? Three Hurricanes happening all at once? Some people believe the new testament verse: 21:25-26

A helpful tip for NYC students to start the school year off on the right foot. The first week of school every year is full of mixed feelings: anxiety, curiously and excitement trying to overcome homework and classroom setbacks. Carmen Fariña, the NYC Chancellor of 1,600 schools, proposed wise tips for parents and students while saddling up the months of school ahead. News 12 Bronx interviewed the longtime educator, capturing her smooth approach of steps to having a stellar school year. Fariña, mother, and grandmother persist on the first day of school; parents should take their child to school despite their age. She explains the importance of parents taking their child to school, "Why not if your child knows your leaving them in a place you respect and thing its a good thing, that's fabulous." Ending her interview, she told News 12 Bronx reporter Krissy Reader: "Going to school can be fun, but if you don't go to school, the rest of your life won't be fulfilling."

Taking the initiative to go to school and receiving an education is challenging but rewarding. It's been two years since I have graduated with bachelors from college. Educators including Fariña who deliver their compassion and wisdom to help students achieve greatness is a plus.

Remy Ma is not done beefing. During VMA's awards last night, the shether rapper was breaking the show to a quick break but not before you hearing this punchline " Nicki, What's good." Ring a bell? The "What's good Miley" slogan was used as a direct message towards Miley Cyrus on last years VMAs for speaking negatively about her in the New York Times. The popular phrase has resurfaced and Remy is serving it on a hot plate. Many people including this guy in this youtube clip weren't pleased with Remy's new shade towards the hip hop diva.

Who is the true savage Remy or Nicki?

eclipseI can't believe I missed the jaw-dropping beauty of the solar eclipse; then I thought it wouldn't be a big deal. I was wrong; everyone was talking the life changing event. My cousin was blowing my phone away with text messages with pictures of the eclipse and my Facebook friends posting online Solar Eclipse 2017 Facebook Post. The eclipse surfaced yesterday in North America at approximately at 3 o'clock in the afternoon with other states capturing the moment during the hour span. Our famous newspaper, The New York Times posted a few pictures of the eclipse

eclipseHow important is the Solar eclipse? According to Roger Schlueter, it's critical. His article, "Yes, the eclipse is a big deal, This is why" listed in the Answer Man column of Belleville (BND).

Q: For the past few weeks I’ve heard everybody yapping eclipse this and eclipse that. The moon passes in front of the sun. Big deal. Tell me, oh great Answer Man, does it make any difference?

A: As a matter of fact, it can, oh dubious party pooper. We’ve come a long way from the days when terrified primitive societies banged drums and shook rattles to scare off the evil monsters that were suddenly devouring the sun at midday. Far from a biblical omen of doomsday (Amos 8:9, among others), this simple yet awe-inspiring alignment of earth, moon, and the sun has produced several discoveries that have helped reshape our scientific knowledge. As early as 500 B.C., the Greek philosopher Anaxagoras used eclipses to conclude that the sun had to be farther away from Earth than the moon, but let me give you two more recent examples. (Schlueter 2017)

Apparently, I missed my chance to see this once in a lifetime of the solar eclipse.
Did you see the solar eclipse? If so share your experience and pass it along to your children and grandchildren

A six-way expressway named “The Sheridan Expressway” has now a project of an upcoming infrastructure. The expressway, located in the heart of the South Bronx is under siege of being removed to decrease chaos, pollution and populated issues in nearby sections. Residents are on board of getting rid of the expressway.

On Sunday, July 24, 2017- a reasonable budget for demolishing the Sheridan Expressway will cost 1 million dollars to tear down the one-mile transportation hub. For decades, the accessible travel expansion has served the Manhattan and Long Island locations. Its history expands longer than its mile stretch to NYC.

History & Planning

The highway was completely built in 1963 to give smoother access through the South Bronx, New York City and Long Island sections instead of traveling onto other New York's congested traffic entries (Whitestone, Hutchison and Bronx River Parkway).

According to the New York Times in 1999, the Sheridan Expressway was a waste of construction and caused pollution throughout sections of the expressway- including Hunts Point. The idea of the Sheridan Expressway removal has been transparent until March 2017 when New York City governor, Andrew M. Cuomo decided to take action to dissolve the expressway.

Cuomo’s initial budget: a previous allocation of $97 million, toward the first phase of totaling the cost of a $1.8 billion project. including a added amount of $600 million, to create a boulevard “Sheridan Boulevard” with landscaped medians and at least two crosswalks (McGeehan 2017).

Overall, the project to remove the expressway is not yet scheduled. The construction of demolishing a depending traffic passage is difficult to take apart without back and forth traffic of market distributors and travel commuters migrating between the lower New York City area and tristate.  The majority of New York residents and government are in favor of removing the Sheridan Expressway but some questions will arise: Will traffic become more chaotic after a one-mile cutout from travel commute or prepping better safety of New York becoming less cluttered on highways?

A year and eleven days (376) later, the streak of preventing gun violence in the West Bronx has ended. On Sunday, July 23, a shooting at Rulay Lounge on Jerome Avenue in Fordham Heights left a man injured from a gunshot wound due to an attempted robbery.  The group, Bronx Rises against Gun Violence (BRAG) and the NYPD 46th Precinct teamed up to create a non-gun violence plan to decrease shootings in one of the borough’s high crime risen areas. The West Bronx section, including Fordham Heights is the center of vicious shootings within a two year period.  The project started in late 2016 to make the section a safe free zone especially for children being outdoors when summer approaches.

The crime scene of Christopher Duran, 14 (left) shooting victim in 44th Precinct location 2014

The breakout of gun violence surrounds the 41st, 44th, and 46th precincts, escalating since 2014. A 2015 article, Shootings on the Rise in The Bronx's 41st, 44th and 46th Precincts explains the widespread of gun violence crimes and victims. May 2015, Christopher Duran- a 14-year-old fell victim to gun violence as he was murdered heading to school in the 44th Precinct territory because of gang affiliation. The killer, Travis Bloch was arrested and charged for murder.  The article notes from the NYPD, the location where the rate of shooting victims have increased: 41st Precinct at 80 percent, 46th Precinct at 52.2 percent and the 44th Precinct at the highest, 155.6 percent.

The group BRAG’s mission is not only stopping gun violence but offer opportunities to fellow Bronxities to make better choices  and contribute to the borough. In June, the 2nd annual Gun Violence Awareness Month occurred. New York City’s Council member, Andy King held an anti-gun violence rally/prayer march at the intersection of White Plains Road and Gun Hill Road. The event widened awareness and solutions to stop overall violence in the city. The council member told We have to go back to [the African proverb] ‘it takes a village to raise a child’... If you see something happening that looks off you must address it.” The message was loud and clear throughout the Bronx to take care of its own.
